Santa Maria in Trastevere is the more ancient church in Rome; it was founded in 221 A. D. by S. Callisto and finished in 341 A. D. by S. Giulio, then it was rebuilt during the XII century by Innocenzo II. The façade, decorated with marvelous mosaics and frescos, and the portico, built by Carlo Fontana during the XVIII century for Pope Clemente XI, are quite interesting. Inside you can admire, among the windows, the refined mosaics showing the Virgin by Cavallini.
In front of the Basilica you can find the homonymous square, landmark of the frantic night life in Trastevere.
