For their monumental sepulchral buildings the Romans take back from Etruscans the ancient Mediterranean type of the grave covered with stones. Upon the mortuary chapel, as a symbolic representation of the habitation, a little hill of earth covered with a mantle of grass is erected.
August's Mausoleum, 44 mt. high, is the greatest expression of this kind of building.
